ParetoLogic AntiSpyware Review

ParetoLogic AntiSpyware provides above average coverage at a reasonable price. The program is a premium version of XoftSpySE (ParetoLogic's standard antispyware product) and boasts extremely fast scan times, a beautiful interface, and a number of additional real-time protection features.

Usability

Installation of the program was fast and easy, and worked flawlessly the first time.

The ParetoLogic AntiSpyware user interface is basic and well laid-out. It consists of a left-hand menu and a right-hand extended information area. The Anti-Spyware menu contains five buttons:

* Home - Directs you to an overview page with links to ParetoLogic's online antispyware resources.
* Scan - exactly what it says
* Ignore - A list of detected threats that you've directed the program to ignore, if any.
* Backup - a list of spyware quarantine files. This is where you go to restore threats that have been previoulsy removed by the program.
* Schedule - a simple scheduler to run the program when you are not at the computer.

ParetoLogic AntiSpyware Scan Screen

The "Active Protection" menu gives you access to features not available in ParetoLogic's standard antispyware program, XoftSpySE. It is here that you can change the default settings for the real-time protection features, such as browser hijack protection, BHO monitor, Network monitor, Starup settings monitor, and so forth. Generally, most people will not need to change these settings but they can come in handy for expert users with special needs.

The first criticism we had with the user interface was that the scan results section is far too small. With only three rows of viewable area at a time, it makes analyzing the detection results a very tedious process.

The second criticism we had were the number of alerts we were constantly presented with the first time we ran the program. One nice feature that XoftSpySE doesn't have however, is that the alerts recognize if they are caught in an infinite loop and automatically turn themselves off after awhile. Still, it would be better if users had the option to completely hide all alerts.

The scan results screen is well laid out, but it doesn't have enough viewable area to look at the detection results.

Removal

We put ParetoLogic performed just a bit better on our Spyware Effectiveness Test as XoftSpySE. Overall, it detected 69% and disabled 55% of the spyware we threw against it. It completely removed 48% of the spyware threats, leaving no trace behind. The only difference was that ParetoLogic ANtiSpyware found and disabled a keylogger that XoftSpySE missed. Our computer ran noticably faster after we were done, and most of the annoying popups and toolbars were a thing of the past.

Like XoftSpySE, the program boasts incredibly fast scan times, taking less than 2 minutes to clean our heavily infested PC.

Quarantine

Like XoftSpySE, Paretologic AntiSpyware also offers the option to quarantine any spyware threats it finds. This is practically a necessity, in case you accidentally remove a piece of adware which is required by another program. However, the product combines all of the spyware it finds into as single file which means you have to restore all threats removed in order to get your file back. This can revert your computer back to a poorly functioning state. Ideally, we'd like the ability to pick and choose which programs can be restored.

Other Options

Other than a vastly improved user interface, most of the differences between ParetoLogic AntiSpyware and XoftSpySE lie behind the scenes. This product includes real-time blocking, enhanced removal technology, and additional scanning options that XoftSpySE doesn't.

Summary

ParetoLogic AntiSpyware provides above average protection against spyware. A beautiful user interface, decent feature selection, and blazing fast scanning make it a good buy.
